Trustees of The Burgate School and Sixth Form
The Burgate School and Sixth Form is an Academy Trust which operates as an exempt charity and a company limited by guarantee, not having share capital. The objective for which The Burgate School and Sixth Form was established is 'to advance for the public benefit education in the United Kingdom, in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing by establishing, maintaining, carrying on, managing and developing a school offering a broad and balanced curriculum'.
The Academy is governed by a board of trustees who are the directors of the Academy Trust constituted under the Memorandum and Articles of the Academy Trust. The Trust currently operates one mixed comprehensive secondary school.
The Academy Trust is responsible for setting and monitoring the overall strategic direction of the school and to provide overall governance. They are not responsible for the day-to-day management of the school which is delegated to the Headteacher who manages the school through a Leadership Team comprising of one Deputy Headteacher, three Assistant Headteachers and a School Business Manager.
The Department for Education's Governance Handbook 2019 states that the Board of Trustees needs to have a strong focus on the following three core functions:
The Board of Trustees meets six times each year, once each half term.
There are also two committees, the Education and the Resources committees which each meet six times a year to give detailed consideration to strategic issues within their remit. The Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher are fully involved in the work of these committees and work in partnership with the trustees.
The Education Committee (chaired by Mrs Newbigging) is responsible for academic performance; student progress; the school's curriculum policy; the pastoral care of students and safeguarding.
The Resources Committee (chaired by Ms Born) is responsible for ensuring sound management and planning of the academy's finances and resources; maintaining the academy's land and premises; health and safety; and staff welfare.
In addition to the above there are committees which meet as and when required to deal with admissions arrangements; student and staff appeals.
The committee structure, its terms of reference and the board of trustees' scheme of delegation are reviewed annually by the board to ensure they are fit for purpose.
Ms Annette Born, Trustee
I am a chartered accountant with 27 years' experience in finance. I have worked in accountancy practice, retail, the Further Education sector and now work as the Finance Director of a multi academy trust with two sixth form colleges. My son is at Burgate School in the Sixth Form and my daughter left Burgate Sixth form a few years ago and is doing a degree apprenticeship. I believe passionately in education, and being a trustee is a great way to put something back into the school. In my spare time I run and cycle and garden and am a member of an amateur and great fun choir.
Mr Andrew Cooper (Chair), Trustee
I am a parent of two students at the Burgate School and Sixth Form - one son in the main school and one son in the sixth form. My daughters also attended the school from Year 7 right through to A-levels; two finished in 2018, whilst our eldest finished in 2008. We moved to Fordingbridge in 2000 because of the school: we wanted a well-balanced education for our children, in a good all-abilities mixed-gender school.
I became a trustee in 2011 to take a more active interest in the education of my children. The role is both demanding and rewarding, and a balance of challenge and support in our drive to be outstanding. I have found that as well as the business experience that I am able to input, I get inspiration and learning from the role too. In December 2019 I was honoured to take on the role of Chair and I look forward to working with staff and trustees to build upon the excellent position that the school has now established.
Professionally, I am a Chartered Engineer and experienced company director. I have worked predominantly in engineering consultancy in the maritime sector and have held various posts ranging from specialist ship design roles, to expert witness, and latterly senior management roles, most recently as Managing Director of an engineering consultancy company.
Miss Carolyne Connolly, Staff Trustee
Being part of The Burgate School Team really is a privilege. Aside from fantastic exam results and Ofsted inspections, being part of a team that is so committed to delivering the very best education and support to our young people is so rewarding. The Burgate team extends also to our amazing students too. Their enthusiasm, talent, hard work and imagination is utterly inspiring. It was therefore a no-brainer for me to take the step to support the strategic direction of the school by becoming a Trustee. I feel passionate about supporting innovation at The Burgate across all its functions, in order that every staff member and student can fully embrace all that the future holds and to help develop sustainable ways to fulfil a forward thinking vision that continues to be creative, inspirational, collaborative and which truly takes Burgate forward.
Mrs Wendy Gregoire, Trustee
As a Chartered Clinical Psychologist I have worked for over thirty-five years in NHS children’s services, independent practice and special education. For eight years, I was chair of a Wessex-wide service development group for autism and have held honorary teaching posts at two London medical schools and Southampton University. As a specialist in neurodevelopmental disorders I am passionate about all children enjoying and engaging in education. I have lived with my family in Woodgreen for over twenty years and both of our daughters were students at The Burgate School and Sixth Form. I have been a member of the Board of Trustees for several years now and currently sit on the Education Committee. I am also the trustee with responsibility for Special Educational Needs and Disability and sit on the committee that oversees the Headteacher’s Performance Management. In my spare time I am a keen painter and potter and take part in the Hampshire Open Studio programme.
Mr Nigel Griffiths, Trustee
I used to be a local government auditor and bank manager but I am now retired. I have two grown up sons, both of whom were students at The Burgate School and Sixth Form before they moved on to university. My wife and I have lived in Fordingbridge for thirty-five years and I have always been an enthusiastic supporter of the school. I was appointed to my current term of office on the Board of Trustees in 2012. I also chair a local residents’ association. I spend most of my leisure time reading, playing golf and enjoying the company of my family, especially my three grandchildren.
Mrs Jenny Hair, Trustee
I am a semi retired Human Resources professional, with 38 years' experience within the NHS, mainly in Salisbury. For most of this time I worked at or near Board level, developing and implementing staff strategies. I have lived in Fordingbridge since 1986 and my three children all attended the Burgate School and Sixth Form.
I first became a Parent Trustee in 2006 and became Chair of the Board of Trustees in January 2013. In December 2019 I felt it was the right and appropriate time to step down from the role of Chair and allow someone else to take on the mantle of leading the board. However, I am continuing as a trustee and looking forward to playing an active role in the exciting opportunities the future will bring. I believe schools play a vital role in enabling their students to gain the skills and attributes, both academic and personal, to make a success of their future life. As an employer I saw how peoples employability was dependent on their social as well as their academic skills and I’m proud that the Burgate School embraces this in their vision and ethos.
Mrs Sarah Hughes, Parent Trustee
I am a parent of two students at the school - one son in the main school and a daughter in the sixth form who are both enjoying their time at The Burgate School and Sixth Form. I have previously been a governor at the children’s primary school for a number of years and was the Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Premises Committee.
I was elected as a Parent Trustee in December 2019 and I look forward to utilising my skills and knowledge to work with staff and trustees to build upon the excellent position that the school has now established.
Professionally I am a Chartered Town Planner and have worked for 20 years within Local Government. In this role amongst other things I have given evidence on behalf of the council to Local Plan examinations, negotiated with developers on strategic housing sites and latterly am helping local communities deliver their Neighbourhood Plans.
Mr David Millar, Trustee
I moved from Downton to Fordingbridge in 2016, at least in part because my daughter was already at The Burgate School and thoroughly enjoying it. During the week I work for a large insurance and consultancy firm called JLT Group, as the Head of Client Communications. It’s a role I enjoy because it brings me into contact with a whole host of organisations that have some sort of employee communication challenge that my team can help them resolve. I am hoping that my background in strategy, communications, marketing, PR and corporate governance can translate into the education sector and help me to support The Burgate School in its ambition to provide every child with a love for learning. I spend my weekends with the family and enjoy running around Ringwood Forest with our tireless dog, Pepper, who mostly comes back when I call her.
Mrs Joanna Newbigging, (Vice Chair), Trustee
Although I originally trained as a Registered Nurse I am currently working as a Teaching Assistant at a secondary school in Salisbury. Prior to this I was employed as a Program Coordinator and Trainer/Facilitator at the Centre for Human Development in California. This involved spending a great deal of time in a wide variety of schools teaching a curriculum designed to reduce adolescent drug use and promote resiliency in young people. This was where my passion for quality education and working with young people started and, since relocating back to the UK in 2011, I have embraced a number of opportunities which have allowed me to fuel this passion. I am an active member of the PTA and the proud parent of two children currently attending The Burgate School and Sixth Form, where I have been a trustee since June 2013. Being a trustee is an extremely rewarding experience and one that allows me to support the school in providing an inspiring and challenging environment for our children. The school ethos of ‘Learning for Life’ is one I truly believe in and, by making it part of every decision, we can ensure that each individual student is given the right opportunities to realise and achieve his or her full potential.
Mr Ian Newman, Trustee
I was born and raised in Fordingbridge and have lived here all my life. I was a pupil at The Burgate School from 1966 to 1971 and Head Boy in my final year before I transferred to Brockenhurst Sixth Form College. I have been a trustee of the school since 1995 and have been involved in many of the changes that have taken place since then. My wife and I run I N Newman Funeral Directors with branches here in Fordingbridge and in Salisbury. Both of our children were pupils at the school. I am involved in many local organisations and in the business communities of Fordingbridge and Salisbury. I am the Lay Chairman of the Diocese of Winchester. I am passionate about the development of the school within the community and firmly believe in promoting "Learning for Life" for every student in The Burgate School and Sixth Form, regardless of their background and ability.
Mr Pover, Headteacher
Having joined The Burgate in 1992, I am now in my eighth year as Headteacher and the school has continued to grow and thrive based on its ethos of Learning for Life. I am very pleased with our two recent record examination results, equally delighted by our wonderful sporting and creative success, but most of all - extremely proud of Burgate students who are well behaved, happy and successful at their school. It is our talented students with the dedicated staff who make the school the special place it is: their boundless enthusiasm, burning desire to succeed and unwavering good humour are refreshing every day we come to work. When I walk around our school it fills me with a great sense of pride: to think that we have achieved this together and, therefore, what we have is special and matters to all of us. We will continue to make The Burgate a great place to study, where we work as a team and look out for each other, because, above all, we enjoy what we do.
Dr Richard Wagland, Parent Trustee
Originally from Essex and London, my family and I moved to Fordingbridge in 2005 because we loved the area. I chose to become a parent trustee at The Burgate school because my two children are both currently students here, and I want to do what I can to help the school to excel. I was previously a governor at Fordingbridge Junior School for five years, and for four years was Chair of Governors (2013-2017). In that time, I experienced two Ofsted inspections, the second when the school moved from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ in 2016. I have a clinical background as a registered nurse, but now work as an academic. Since 2009, I have worked at the University of Southampton as a senior research fellow and lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and before that, I worked at the University of Hertfordshire. My research interests involve ways to explore and improve the experience of cancer patients. I teach on the MSc Clinical Leadership in Cancer and Palliative Care programme, and lead and co-lead several undergraduate and postgraduate modules in research methods.
