The students of the Burgate Sixth Form have yet again proved that hard work pays off and fully deserve their excellent results. With 45% of all entries at A*- B Grades and 77% at Grades A*- C the students have beaten the current record set by the cohort of 2017! The vast majority of students have secured their place at their first-choice university, including a high number of students who will now continue their education in a Russell Group University.
Headteacher David Pover said: “I am thoroughly delighted that our hardworking students and dedicated staff have ensured that it has been another really successful year for A Level results at The Burgate Sixth Form. We have an unprecedented third successive year of improvement in grades across a wide range of subjects, which had already placed us as one of the very best sixth forms in the wider area. There has been a great deal of upheaval recently with A Level curriculum changes and a heavy cut of funding into sixth forms – so to achieve these results in the face of that is brilliant.”
All students are to be congratulated on their tremendous achievements and with so many students achieving top grades it is certainly tough to pick out the best. Some of the top high flyers with straight A*/A grades include:
1. Elizabeth Lloyd Wilson
2. Ralph Rutherford Stegall
3. Robert Wells
4. Gabriel Wright
5. Ellie Newell
6. Lucy Ramsdale
7. Emilie Ryan
Elizabeth Lloyd Wilson who was one of those students who achieved five A*s was obviously very pleased: “I am really happy with my results, I couldn’t have hoped to have done better.”
Gabriel Wright who got three A*s and an A* in his EPQ and is now off to Warwick to read Maths and Philosophy was particularly elated: “Yay! I am really grateful for all the help I have had from the teachers over my seven years at The Burgate”.
In spite of the rain the atmosphere in the Sixth Form Hall was celebratory as students opened envelopes with staff and family members. Lauren Taylor who is off to the University of Winchester with two A*s and a B was full of joy: “Never in a million years did I expect these results. I couldn’t be happier”.
Many students chose to come into college and open their results in person with staff and friends as opposed to looking online. For example, Ralph Rutherford Stegall, who achieved three A*s and is off to study Sport and Exercise Science at Bath, said: “I just wanted to say thanks to all my teachers throughout Burgate who have been amazing and so helpful”.
Excitement was in the air as many students’ sights are already set on university life. Finn Bowery captured the mood perfectly: " I am off to the University of The Arts in London to study Live Television and Events. I will never forget the help I received at The Burgate”.
Likewise Meg Smith with two A*s and a B is excited to be off to Arts University Bournemouth: “I am so happy and relieved to have got my results and be going to do what I’ve always wanted to”.
Head of Sixth Form Mrs Fenner was particularly impressed with the number of students getting grades at A*: "7.5% of all entries were at A*, which is stunning! A quarter of all students in Maths received the top grade; while in Art and Photography 28% also received an A*. Our Extended Project Qualification continued to shine with 33% of grades also at the very top”.
Overall it has been an exciting morning at The Burgate with staff, students and parents joining together to support and celebrate with the class of 2018. We wish them all the very for the future and look forward to seeing them in December at A-level Presentation Evening.
