Working closely with the school’s independent careers advisers, our staff help each student to develop a personal action plan and will offer individual advice and support as required. Students at all Key Stages have access to Kudos, a careers advice website and all Sixth Form students have access to Unifrog, a university and apprenticeship search engine.
Students begin a Careers Education and Guidance programme through the school PSHE programme in which they are encouraged to examine their individual interests, abilities and aptitudes, and to consider a wide range of different types of occupation. Students from Year 8 onwards are invited with their parents to attend our annual careers convention when local employers and representatives of industry and commerce and colleges of further and higher education are available to talk about the jobs and courses they offer and to give general advice.
Students are given further guidance and helped to consider the options available to them in employment, further education and training. Students in Year 10 take part in a mock interview day with the Fordingbridge Rotarians where they develop the skills required in applying for careers. In addition all students in Year 10 take part in the work experience programme which runs during July of each academic year. Each pupil in Year 11 is offered a consultation with a specialist careers adviser to explore all possible career options and routes available to them.
At Sixth Form the guidance programme extends the students’ awareness of careers opportunities and offers support through access to a well-resourced careers library, group sessions, individual interviews, visiting speakers, work experience and the opportunity to visit universities and local employers. It also ensures that students and their parents are given full information about the opportunities that exist in Further and Higher Education and are guided through the relevant application procedures.
